Tari Chapter 2: The Community Takeover
Dear Tari Community,
You're probably wondering what we’ve been up to. While we haven’t posted a newsletter recently, Contributors have remained busy building and moving the protocol forward. Now we have some news worth breaking the silence for.
The big one: the Ootle (Tari’s Layer 2) is confirmed for November 11th. Programmable privacy, on a decentralized network, secured by L1 Proof-of-Work.
But wait, there’s more! Tari has been taken over - by you. The protocol is being led by the community now. Let’s elaborate on what that actually means and how it works, because it represents a whole new chapter for Tari.
The Tari Council
A community project needs deliberate, open leadership. Tari Labs has appointed the inaugural Tari Council, assembled from top talent in the crypto space and the Tari Community. The Council makes key strategic decisions for the project, acts as stewards of project funds, approves the Tari Improvement Proposals brought forth by community members, and provides guidance on project norms. Below are just a few things the council has already done in the short time it's been active:
- Set up the Core Contributor program (read on for more info!)
- Inducted the initial wave of Core Contributors
- Increased the limits for the Tari Bridge
- Approved an upgrade proposal to improve the difficulty algorithm
- Revitalized community channels like Discord and Telegram
- Established a community forum & wiki
- Revived and expanded our marketing resources (which is why you're getting this email!)
This is only the beginning. The Council is now ramping up for the launch of the Ootle, and there's much more to come soon!
The Core Contributor Program
A community project needs a way to admit new trusted team members who get real work done. The Tari Council introduces the new Core Contributor Program: Giving people who have earned trust through consistent contribution more say in how the project runs. Core Contributors elect the council, make the on-the-ground decisions of the project, and make an impact in a global community. We're not just talking code-- but community organizers, project managers, artists and designers, and infrastructure gurus. If you're making a difference with your skills, you can be inducted into the Core.

What about Tari Labs?
Tari Labs isn’t going anywhere. They are one of seven members on the Tari Council. They are still supporting protocol development, sponsoring multiple Core Contributors, and acting as a centralized authority for Tari when required.
What's Next?
Our immediate next steps are focused on rolling out the Ootle. However, simply pushing out an update is not enough. We as a community need to make an active effort to support our developers and users of the new Layer 2. As such, the Tari Council is sponsoring 5 months of events, contests, and marketing campaigns to coincide with the Ootle Launch. Each month will have a theme and an event, and each event will have XTM prizes. The first event will start September 1: a contest for the favorite community project. This contest is open to all existing community projects, and it is the only contest where existing submissions will be accepted. The top prize is 1,000,000 XTM. All submissions must be open source. We'll post full contest details on the community forums shortly, and the complete event schedule is below.
